Unity plaza is considered to be the best place to buy the latest hardware and accessories for your PC. Hundreds of people flock daily to check out the newest arrivals to the market. It was on this background that the Intel Unity Challenge 2009 took place on the 12Th December.

The tournament which was created by Intel and organised by Lanka eSports, consisted of FIFA 09, Need for Speed Most Wanted, Unreal Tournament 2k4, Counter Strike 1.6 and Red Alert 3. All the games except for UT which was held as a death match, was played one on one. There were over 150 people packed in to unity plaza most of whom were registered to play NFS: MW followed by FIFA.
The tournament was spread out across 6 venues
Asian Computers, Tech Zone, Barclays, The Notebook Arcade, Hardnet Computers and finally Netcom. Our Special thanks to all the 6 vendors for making this a success.

This was the first time in which retail outlets were incorporated into hosting tournaments and it added a unique twist to Sri Lankan gaming. Vendors were allowed to show case and promote the high end gaming equipment. After some epic battles and nail biting re-matches the tournament found its winners. Kushan 'Flashbullet' Senanayake won the title of NFS whilst Amila 'AJ' Jayasooriya raced in second. Gayan 'xtreem' Karunarathne won FIFA 09 by beating Kushan 'Flashbullet' Senanayake at a thrilling final. Munstansir 'OblivioN' Ameerali crushed his opponents in Red Alert 3 whilst Supun 'Electroz' De Silva fired the final shot to seal his win in a nail biting UT final. Unfortunately due to last minute complications in infrastructure which was beyond the control of Lanka eSports the CS matches were cancelled. The organisers wish to convey their apology to the gamers who was in attendance.

This definitely was a way of not only adding spice to the Sir lankan gaming scene but also to create awareness amongst people of how far competitive gaming otherwise known as 'Esports' has developed in Sri Lanka. Its fair to say that the Intel Unity challenge was extremely successful and it is hoped that this is the first of many more unique tournaments offered to uplift E-Sports in Sri Lanka.
